Facial Hair: I will go to my grave wondering why some people are so passionate about the most bizarre things.

Maybe I lack imagination but why would anyone get worked up enough over facial hair that they'd stage the annual "World Beard and Moustache Championships", which take place this year in Carson City, Nevada -- on November 1. (via GMSV)

Contestants will compete in a number of categories including: the Handlebar, Dali, Fu Manchu and the Imperial (for moustaches) as well as the Garibaldi, Verdi and Freestyle (for beards).

I had a beard and moustache once. I liked it for a while but it became too much work and made my driver's license photo look like one of those "wanted" posters that hang on post office walls. One day I shaved off the beard but left the moustache. When I got to work, people asked if I'd grown a moustache.

My wife had the good sense to gently convince me that there was a face under that fluff people might want to see -- or at least she wanted to see.
